The Jaguar (Panthera onea)

Although the jaguar is an animal that is found in Asia, it is famous in Asia because of the car named after the animal. This report provides information on the characteristics, habitat and life of the jaguar.
The jaguar belongs to the cat family. It is one of the four big (roaring) cats; the lion, the tiger and the leopard. However, a jaguar has larger rosette markings, a stronger body, and a shorter tail. A Rosette is a rose shaped spot on an animal. The rosette of the jaguars sometimes look like the print of an animal paw.
The jaguar is brownish- yellow in color and has spots on the head, neck and legs, and rosettes on other parts of its body. It can weigh up to 100 kilograms and has powerful jaw that it can easily crush the skull of its prey.

Palms

Palms are a group of 2.780 species of tropical trees and shrubs.
Palms have a few very large leaves called fronds. The fond grow from the main bud at the top of a tall thin trunk. If the main bud at the top of the trunk is damaged, the tree will stop growing and die.
Palm trunks do not get thicker like others trees; they simply grow taller. Some palms have trunks no bigger than a pencil. Others are 60 m high and 1 m across.
Palm fruits vary enormously. Some are no bigger than a pea. The fruit of the coco-de-mer coconut palm is the biggest seed in the world, growing over 60 cm across.

The Sugar Glider

The sugar glider is a marsupial, just like many other Australians animals’ – the kangaroo, the koala, and the wombat for instance. The sugar glider is a possum – very similar to Tupai in Indonesia. It basically lives in trees. It eats leaves and fruits. However, the Australian sugar glider has a very special skill. It can jump from tree to tree like a tupai but it can also ‘sort of fly’ as well. In fact, it glides or ‘terbang’ in bahasa Indonesia. When it jumps from one tree to another it spreads its four legs out wide; its extra skin also spreads out and functions like a parachute.

Orang Utans

Orangutan means “forest man”- a very suitable name for the largest of the tree dwelling apes; a large male can weigh 90kg.
Orangutans live in Sumatra and Kalimantan. They are very gentle animals and live quietly several meters off the ground. They spend their time moving from meal to meal by passing from tree to tree, swinging rather than jumping, using their long arms to carefully reach out the gaps among trees.
It is thought that there are about 150,000 wild orangutans, but only about 20,000 are in reserves and safely protected from danger. The main threat to the orangutans comes from logging companies, or from people who illegally capture and sell orangutans as pets. The logging companies exploit the living rain forest for timber but in doing so destroy the environment for the orangutans. The orangutans need dense forests so that they can easily move from tree to tree in searching for food.
The destruction of rain forests could also bring about the extinction of the orangutans. They cannot survive without dense living forests.

Jelly Fish

Jelly fish are not really fish. They are invertebrate animals. This means that unlike fish or people, they have no backbones. In fact, they have no bones at all.
Jellyfish have stomachs and mouths, but no heads. They have nervous systems for sensing his world around them, but no brains. They are made almost entirely of water, which is why you can look through them.
Some jellyfish can glow in darkness by making their own light. The light is made by a chemical reaction inside the jellyfish. Scientists believe jellyfish glow for several reasons. For example, they may glow to scare away predators or to attract animals they like to eat.
Most jellyfish live in salt water, apart from a few types that live in fresh water. Jellyfish are found in oceans and seas all over the world. They live in warm, tropical seas and in icy waters near the North and South poles.

The Purse of Gold

A beggar found a leather purse that someone had dropped in a market place. Opening it, he discovered that it contained 100 pieces of gold. Then he heard a merchant shouted, "A reward! A reward to the one who find my leather purse!"

Being an honest man, the beggar came forward and handed the purse to the merchant saying, "Here is your purse. Will you keep your word to give a reward now?"

"Reward?" scoffed the merchant greedily counting the amount of gold. "The purse I dropped had 200 pieces of gold in it. You've already stolen more than the reward I'll give to you.! Go away or I'll tell you to the police."

"I'm an honest man," said the beggar defiantly. "Let's take this matter to the court!" In the court, the judge patiently listened to both sides of the story and said, "I believe you both. Justice is possible! Merchant, you stated that the purse you lost contained 200 pieces of gold. Well, that's a considerable cost. But the purse the beggar found had only 100 pieces of gold. Therefore, it couldn't be the one you lost."

A Legend of Candy Can

A candy maker in Indiana wanted to make a candy that would be a witness, so he made the Christmas Candy Cane. He incorporated several symbols for the birth, ministry, and death of Jesus Christ.
He began with a stick of pure white, hard candy. White to symbolize the Virgin Birth and the sinless nature of Jesus, and hard to symbolize the Solid Rock, the foundation of the church, and firmness of the promises of God.
The candy maker made the candy in the form of a "J" to represent the precious name of Jesus, who came to earth as our Savior. It also represents the staff of the "Good Shepherd" with which He reaches down into the ditches of the world to lift out the fallen lambs who, like all sheep, have gone astray.
Thinking that the candy was somewhat plain, the candy maker stained it with red stripes. He used the tree small stripes to show the stripes of the scourging Jesus received by which we are healed. The large red stripe was for the blood shed by Jesus on the Cross so that we could have the promise of eternal life, if only we put our faith and trust in Him. Unfortunately, the candy became known as a Candy Cane - a meaningless decoration seen at Christmas time. But the meaning is still there for those who "have eyes to see and ears to hear".

The Fish

Fish are animals that live in water. Fish have fins that help them to swim. Most fish have slimy skin covered with scales which are very small and can hardly be seen.
Fish breathe through gills. These look like a comb and lie on each side of the head. Fish take in water all the time. The water flows in through the mouth, over the gills, and out through the sides of the head. When a fish takes in water, it is not drinking but breathing, and the gills absorb oxygen from the water.
The body of a fish is made up of the head, the trunk and the tail fins.
There are many different kinds of fish which have many different shapes and colors. Some fish are long and thin, while others are flat and rounded. Most fish have bodies which are broad at the trunk region and narrow towards the head and tail.

The Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees are humans' closest relatives compared to any other apes. They like to stay on the ground, but they climbs among the trees. Their hands and feet can easily grip branches and objects, because their hobby is swinging. Chimps like to search for termites, ants and never refuse of sweet fruits and nuts. Chimpanzees communicate with each other using a wide variety of sound.

The Cheetah

The cheetah is sometimes called hunting leopard but it is quite a distinct animal. The body is more slender and the legs are longer, while its coat has single spot, not rosettes. It reaches a length of just over 1 meter, with a tail about 75 centimeters long. Cheetahs live on open plains in southern Africa. In India the cheetah is now extinct.
Cheetah hunts alone or in small groups. They prey on small antelopes which run down at great speed. Over a short distance the cheetah is probably the fastest land animal, reaching speeds of more than 100 kilometers an hour. Unlike other cats, the cheetah cannot retract its claws into sheaths.
