An Ugly Duckling
www.robartstudio.com |
One bright sunny morning, near the lake, a mother duck was very pleased that her eggs had begun to hatch. ‘Cheeep. Cheeep” chirped the chicks. Mother duck was very proud of her fluffy duckling—but one of them looked different from the others.
“Quack! Quack! How can that duckling be one of mine?” Mother duck wondered. “He’s so big and ugly.” All the other chicks were mean and teased Sammy, the ugly duckling. They did not want to play with him.
Poor Sammy was very sad. “I don’t belong here,” he said. One day he packed his bags and left home to look for someone who wants to be his friend.
Soon he came to a pond. There he saw some ducks swimming. But they didn’t want to be his friends either. Poor Sammy was very unhappy, he then waddled away.
The next day an old woman saw Sammy. “I think I’ll cook him for my dinner,” she said. She tried to catch him, but Sammy ran as fast as he could.
Poor Sammy was so sad that he hid himself by the riverbank. One day he watched some beautiful swans fly past him. “I wish I were as magnificent as the swan,” he sighed.
Time passed by. Spring, summer, and fall went by. Finally spring came again. Sammy decided to go to come out of his hiding place. He looked at his reflection in the river. He was very surprised. What did he see? “Is that really me? I’m a beautiful swan!
“Look at that swan! He’s the most magnificent of them all!” said children in the town. Sammy had never felt happier in his life. He was no longer an ugly duckling.

The Foolish Donkey
One evening, a hungry lion came out of the jungle to look for food. He walked to a farm. He saw many animals on the farm. There was a fat donkey near the fence.
“This fat donkey will be my dinner!” said the hungry lion. He walked slowly behind the donkey.
A rooster saw the lion. He crowed loudly and flapped his wings to warn the donkey.
The donkey heard the rooster. He saw the lion behind him and ran away. The rooster’s loud cry also frightened the lion.
The donkey said to himself, “I’m bigger than the rooster. If the lion is afraid of the rooster, he will be more afraid of me.” Then the donkey came out of the farm and chased the lion.
The donkey had forgotten that the lion was the strongest of all animals. The lion bounced back on the donkey and killed it.

A Fox and A Goat
One hot summer day when all the ponds and rivers were dry, a fox walked about to look for water to drink. At last he found an old well in which there was a little water to drink. At last he found an old well in which there was a little water. But the well was very deep, and the water was out of his reach.
"I wanted some water, but not this much" said the fox to himself, as he splashed around in the water.
He tried again and again to reach it, and at last he fell in but he could not get out. He was just like a prey in a trap.
"Now how am I going to get out of here" he said, looking up at the top of the well.
Just then a thirsty goat came to the well. He looked down and was surprised to see the fox in the water.
"What are you doing down there?" asked the goat.
"I came down to get some of this wonderful cool water" said the fox, pretending everything was alright.
"Come on down and try some. It's the best water you'll ever taste" he shouted up at the goat. 'And there isn't any more water for miles."
"I'm thirsty, and that water does look so good" thought the goat.
"OK. Look out, I'm coming down," the goat shouted to the fox as he jumped down into the well.
Just as the goat started drinking, the fox said, "There's one small problem. The top of the well is so high it's going to be hard getting out of here. But don't worry I have a plan."
"If," he said to the goat "you put your front feet on the wall of the well, I'll run up your back and jump up to the top. Once I'm out I'll help you to get out too."
The goat did as he was told and the fox leap onto his back, jumped up on to his horns, and then scrambled up out of the well.
"That was a really good plan" said the fox.
"See you later" he said, looking down at the goat.
"But, what about me?" cried the goat from the bottom of the well.
"If you had any brains you would never have gone down there until you had worked out how to get out." said the fox.
"Have you ever heard the expression, look before you leap?" laughed the fox as he ran away.
